NAVAL, Biliran, April 25, 2017— “Dear young people, dominate the social media with your stories of how God deeply loves you.”
This is how Most Rev. Crispin B. Varquez, DD, Bishop of Borongan, encouraged the youth in his homily during the second day of the 5th Regional Youth Day (RYD) held April 20-23 in Naval, Biliran.
“There are many ways that we can help others feel the presence of God in our world today. One way is through reading the Sacred Scriptures,” the bishop told the nearly one thousand delegates coming from Central and Eastern Visayas.
“Upload bible verses instead! You must counterattack fake news and trolls with the Good News of God’s love and mercy,” Varquez said.
“You can even use facebook to spread truth and be instruments of communion in a world that hungers for God,” he continued.
The bishop strongly challenged the delegates “to use social media wisely and responsibly.”
Hosted by the Diocese of Naval this year, this gathering of young people is held regularly every three years, and is attended by ten arch/dioceses namely: Cebu, Palo, Calbayog, Catarman, Borongan, Naval, Maasin, Dumaguete, Talibon, and Tagbilaran.
This year’s gathering aimed to teach the young about their important role in the parish; and to teach them to care for God’s creation by discussing during their sessions Laudato Si, an encyclical letter by Pope Francis on caring for our common home.
The Most Rev. Leopoldo Jaucian, SVD, DD, the Chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Youth, graced the occasion.
The Diocese of Tagbiliran is set to host the next RYD come 2019. (E. Raagas/ Este News)
